Lewis J. Saul has over 25 years of experience in product liability and personal injury law. Mr. Saul's concentration is in complex litigation involving medical devices, pharmaceutical products, environmental and consumer issues.
Mr. Saul has served as class counsel and been appointed national counsel in Multi-District Litigation (MDL) Plaintiff Steering Committees in numerous cases. His MDL appointments include: by the presiding Judge in In Re: MTBE Products Liability Litigation (S.D.N.Y.) as co-lead counsel; by the presiding judge in In re Copley Pharmaceutical, Inc. "Albuterol" Products Liability Litigation (MDL 1013), where Mr. Saul also represented the two lead plaintiffs; by the presiding judge in In re Silicone Gel Products Liability Litigation, as Co-Vice-Chairperson of the Foreign Claimants Subcommittee where he represented the interests of approximately 60,000 non-U.S. claimants; and he was appointed by the presiding Judge in Bowling v. Pfizer, Inc., Case No. C-1-91-256, as Special Counsel to Class counsel to represent the interests of non U.S. claimants with defective heart valves.
Mr. Saul represented the Plaintiff Class in In Re: MTBE Products Liability Litigation (S.D.N.Y.). He has also served as class counsel in Vorhis v. American Medical Systems, No. C-1-94-824 (S.D. Ohio), Deminne v. Smart Corporation, No. 151794, (Sup. Ct. Montgomery Co., Md.), a certified state class action involving overcharges for copies of medical records which resulted in a settlement where all overcharges were refunded; and Meyers v. State of Texas, a putative class action regarding the Americans with Disabilities Act. His reported decisions include Duvall v. Bristol-Myers Squib, 518 U.S. 1030, 116 S.Ct. 2575, 135 L.Ed 2d 1090 (1996) on remand to 103 F.3d 324 (4th Cir. 1996).
Among the cases Mr. Saul is currently involved is In Re The Delaco Company where Mr. Saul is co-counsel with a New York bankruptcy firm in representing the rights of a group of Dexatrim users in bankruptcy proceedings in United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. Mr. Saul spearheaded negotiations with Debtor’s counsel and the Tort Claimants Committee resulting in fairer compensation and administration of Dexatrim claims under the Debtor’s Reorganization Plan.
Mr. Saul is a member of the bars of the District of Columbia and Virginia and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the Supreme Court of the Commonwealth of Virginia, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, and the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.
Mr. Saul graduated from Goddard College in 1974
with a B.A. in Fine Arts where he received a grant from the
National Endowment of Arts to teach art in public schools. He
received his law degree from George Mason School of Law in 1979.
He is a sustaining member of the American Trial Lawyers Association.
