Defective Knee Implants

Total knee replacement surgeries are among the most common surgical procedures performed in the United States. Approximately 790,000 total knee replacements are performed each year. It is estimated that this number is likely to grow to more than 3.5 million knee replacement surgeries performed annually by 2030.

Total Knee Replacement Surgery

Total knee replacement, also known as total knee arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure where the weight bearing surfaces of the patient’s knee are replaced. Knee replacements are most commonly performed to relieve pain and immobility due to osteoarthritis.

Defective Knee Implant Injuries

Defective implant devices can lead to early device failure due to a number of reasons, including:

  • Failure of the components to properly bond to the bone

  • Fracture

  • Metal debris wearing off components

  • Polyethylene or plastic wear

Recent medical studies and reports link failed knee implants to significant injuries, some of which require revision surgery, including:

  • Disassociation of implant

  • Fracture

  • Infection

  • Loosening of components

  • Mobility and instability problems

  • Pain and swelling

  • Revision Surgery

  • Knee Implants Under Investigation

Numerous hip implant failure cases are actively being litigated around the United States. Plaintiffs generally allege the hip devices are defectively designed and that the companies that manufactured the devices failed to adequately warn both orthopedic surgeons and patients about the risks. Plaintiffs also allege the companies failed to properly or sufficiently test the hip implant devices before selling them to patients.
